How do you know whether you’re the father of a child?

Having a baby should be the happiest of times – but it could be that you are riddled with doubts about your paternity. Not sure if you’re the father? Then there are steps you can take to set your mind at rest. If you’re concerned that you may be held financially responsible for a child that’s not biologically yours, help is at hand.

Your blood type

One indicator that you are not a child’s father is your blood group, as it’s not possible for a child to possess a blood group antigen that’s not present in one or other of their parents. So a blood test could determine without a doubt that you are not a child’s parent – but it won’t establish that you are their father.

Want greater certainty?

There are all sorts of theories that claim to be able to establish whether you are the father or not, the shape of your toes or ear lobe for example. But if you want greater certainty than a blood test or such theories will afford you, then a DNA test will be your best course of action, giving you greater assurance.

Take a DNA test

That’s because a DNA test is the most accurate tool available to identify someone. As you know; DNA tests have been used in numerous legal cases around the world to establish the identity of key people involved. DNA tests have been used to right wrongs and overturn injustices, and perhaps they could help you too.

When it relates to the paternity of a child, a DNA test will establish with certainty that you are not the child’s father or that there’s a greater than 99.999% that you are the father.

Need evidence for a child maintenance case?

For the test to be as accurate as possible, and for the results to be accepted by the Child Maintenance Service it’s important for the mother, as well as the child and the potential father,  to take part in the DNA test. By involving all three parties, the DNA results you receive will be as robust and reliable as possible, giving you greater confidence.

Your paternity tests

Remember, for tests involving a child under 16 years old, consent from the adult with parental responsibility will be required. Also, remember, that all adults involved in the testing process will be given a copy of the test results.

Your peace of mind

Paternity tests will help you to establish with 100% certainty that you are not the father or that in all probability you are the father of the child in question. A DNA test is by far the most accurate guide to establishing the paternity of a child and could rule you out completely.
