Top 5 Things You Need to Know Before Undergoing Vision Correction Surgery

Things You Need to Know Before Undergoing Vision Correction Surgery

Are you thinking about undergoing vision correction surgery but need to know more before you make up your mind? Here are the top 5 things you need to know beforehand.

If you’re considering having vision correction surgery, you’re probably fed up with your vision.

Maybe glasses are really inconvenient, or contacts irritate your eyes.

Whatever made you decide surgery was the best option for you, you probably have a great reason. But there’s still a lot that you need to know before you step inside any operating room.

Here are the top five things you need to go before you have Lasik eye surgery.

1. Know Your Vision

This might seem like an obvious thing to know. You know that you have bad vision and you want to have better vision. That’s all you need. Right?

Well, not exactly. If you’re super nearsighted, for example, you might actually have to go back for two procedures. If that’s the case, you’ll want to know way ahead of time.

You can have this conversation with your doctor during your many conversations pre-surgery.

2. Learn How To Choose A Surgeon

Speaking of doctors, you’ll need to figure out who will perform this procedure for you. The eye doctor you already see might not be qualified to perform Lasik eye surgery.

Here’s a helpful tip. If you go to see an optometrist for your check ups, they’re not qualified to perform vision correction surgery. If you see an ophthalmologist, though, you’re good to go.

If you need to choose a new doc, make sure you check their Lasik qualifications, what experience they have, and if they’re board certified.

3. Understand The Procedure

You should also do your research about what the procedure will look like before you say yes to corrective surgery. There are lots of resources and videos available to help walk you through what the whole thing looks like.

Your doctor should also be able to help you get a clear picture of what you’ll experience before, during, and after the procedure. The surgery itself is actually pretty quick, but some people still get nervous.

Knowing what to expect can help calm those nerves.

4. Figure Out If You Qualify

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to undergo Lasik eye surgery. You don’t want to prepare yourself mentally for something you won’t be able to experience anyway.

If you have issues with dry eyes or a corneal condition, for example, you can’t undergo Lasik.

There are various other conditions that could disqualify you — talk through them with your surgeon.

5. Know The Limits

Lasik is a life-changing experience for many people, but it still has limits. Make sure you know what they are so that you have reasonable expectations.

If you get Lasik at a younger age, for example, you still might have to get reading glasses as you get older. Lasik won’t necessarily prevent that. Plus, your vision will be better after the surgery, but you won’t necessarily have 20/20 vision.

You should also read more now about the possible restrictions you could have after the surgery is over.
